SEO stands for search engine optimization. This is the practice of getting websites to rank in the “organic” Google searches. These are the searches right below the ads Google places at the top of their search engine.

Of the 12 Billion searches done on Google every month, numerous studies have shown that 70% or more of the clicks go to the websites that are in the organic listings versus the paid ads called PPC. This is why it is vital to have your site at the top of Google…and here’s another reason why…

If you’re not using SEO to market your small business you are leaving lots of money on the table. Period.

So how does Google determine which sites they put at the top and which ones they don’t? Google has a “secret” algorithm they uses that changes on a regular basis. Which means to master SEO, one must constantly stay on top of the changes Google makes in order to keep the top rankings.

But the simple answer goes like this. Google works like a popularity contest. If a lot of people say you are cool, then you must be cool. Google uses links and social signals to determine this. If a lot of people link to your website, then Google assumes you must be cool. And if you have YouTube videos with lots of views and a Facebook pages with lots of followers, then you must be pretty cool. The makes sense. And if you have these things in place, Google rewards you with high rankings.

On a side note, the work will do to get your business to the top of Google, will also get your website to the top of Yahoo! and Bing as well…the cherry on top :-)
